In Memoriam: Gary Mather
November 14, 2024 | Wolf Trap Foundation
Wolf Trap Foundation grieves the loss of Foundation Board alumnus Dr. Gary D. Mather. An accomplished professional and benevolent champion for philanthropic endeavors, Gary was particularly devoted to the performing arts.
After 43 years of service, Gary retired as Senior Partner Emeritus of Booz Allen Hamilton in 2015. During his career, he led the firm's defense business, health care and commercial strategy, and transformation-focused assignments. He also served on the company's board for 15 years as a member of the Personnel Committee, Executive Leadership Team, and as Chair of the Finance Committee. He held Ph.D. and B.E.E. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and E.E. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Passionate about music and an avid classical guitarist, Gary was increasingly involved with arts causes, including Wolf Trap, upon his retirement. Gary was nominated to the Wolf Trap Foundation Board in 2017, lending his considerable expertise to the Communications and Marketing, Finance, and Ball Host committees over the course of his seven-year tenure. Importantly, he brought his keen sense of analytical curiosity to every encounter, often resulting in generating new ways to think about a process, a problem, an assumption, or a solution.
His philanthropic spirit and generosity were remarkable. His legacy will continue through the Gary D. Mather and Christina Co Mather Fund for Wolf Trap, an endowment he established with his wife, current Foundation Board member Christina Co Mather, as leading supporters of the Campaign for Wolf Trap: Our Next Chapter.
We are forever grateful for Gary’s generosity and brilliant influence on our community and send much love and appreciation to his dear wife, Tina. We will miss him greatly.
